How to Make Moving Day Run Smoothly

A practical guide to making moving day run smoothly, from preparing access and essentials to settling into your new home.

Moving day has a way of making ordinary jobs feel urgent. A little preparation beforehand gives you room to think when the day changes shape.

Start with one calm corner

Choose a room, cupboard or corner that will stay clear until the end. Keep keys, paperwork, phones and chargers together in one labelled bag so the things you need repeatedly do not disappear under a pile of boxes.

Make the first-night box before the last box

Pack medication, toiletries, tea or coffee, basic plates, children’s essentials and a change of clothes. A separate cleaning kit with cloths, bin bags and kitchen roll is useful at both addresses.

Give the removals team a clear start

Point out anything staying behind, show the team the route through the property and mention fragile items or access details that have changed since the quote. Keep walkways and stairs as clear as possible.

Leave time for the handover

Allow time for meter readings, handing over keys and checking cupboards before leaving your old home. After unloading, check the rooms and delivered belongings at your new home.
