Good packing keeps boxes strong, makes their contents easy to identify and helps you unpack.
Pack by room, not by object
Keeping each room together gives you an easier landing. Start with the areas you use least and leave daily essentials until last. If you combine smaller items, label both rooms clearly.
Use the right box for the job
Small boxes are best for books, tins and dense items. Use larger cartons for bedding, lampshades and cushions. Tape the centre seam and both edge seams across the base of each box to form an H. Fill gaps without overfilling the box.
Protect the things that can break
Wrap fragile items separately and use soft layers between pieces. Label fragile boxes on more than one side, and keep irreplaceable documents and jewellery with you rather than placing them in the van.
Leave a useful unpacking trail
Numbering boxes is helpful when paired with a short list on your phone. Finish each room with one clearly marked “open first” box so the first evening stays practical.
